Answer: Marie Antoinette was the daughter of Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresa of Austria. She was the wife of Louis XVI, whom she married before he became the French king. She was notorious for high living, extravagance, and no understanding of the misery of the common people. Told that they had no bread, she is supposed to have retorted "Let them eat cake." There is considerable evidence that the remark, cited by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, was never made. During the revolution, she was guillotined for treason because she attempted to bring Austria to the aid of the throne.
The theme? The power of the mighty depends ultimately upon those whom they rule.
