Question: Marie Antoinette w/ Kirsten Dunst editting mistake?
I saw Marie Antoinette in the theater when it came out a couple years ago, and watch it last night on cable. I noticed a big editing error on the part of being historically accurate.
In the montage scene where they play Bow Wow Wow's "I want candy" and show her in different costumes and trying on tons of shoes, in one clip where there is a stack of shoes & shoe boxes I saw a Converse All Star sneaker laying in the pile of shoes. I'm sure it wasn't intentional.
I can see that, I remember when the movie came out Sofia said the costumes weren't completely accurate and I knew the soundtrack was going to be mostly contemporary. But I thought the converse was quite a stretch.
Answer: it was intentional. that has obviously been picked up on by many people. sofia coppola the director has said in interviews that she did it deliberately to bridge the gap between telling the story of marie antoinette and that of a young girl having fun. she used the converse trainers to show that marie is not that different to contemporary teens and just lives to party and have fun. the music is obviously also contemporary music, its all just to create this atmosphere that the audience can relate to, but just in a period setting.
