Answer: The Committee of Public Safety was first set up in April of 1793 during the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution. During the Reign of Terror, the Jacobins were led by Robespierre and they held trials and executions by the guillotine of those whom they suspected of loyalty to the king and queen aka enemies and conspirators against the revolution. Queen Marie Antoinette was executed during the Reign of Terror in 1793 based on evidence for treason, orgies, incest, overspending, and many other various, and probably false, crimes. Before their executions, King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette tried to escape on June 20, 1791. They were captured at Varennes and returned to the Tuileries. The Tuileries were later stormed on August 10, 1792 by the Paris mob which killed the Swiss Guard as the royal family fled.
