Marie Antoinette Cheese Cake

Question: What food would Marie Antoinette have eaten?
I watched the 2006 film Marie Antoinette, and Kirsten Dunst (the heroin) indulges platter after platter of little cakes, rich chocolates, strawberries and whipcream and artfully sliced cheeses and vegetables throughout the movie. It's certainly beautiful and fits with that spoiled, rockstar theme of the movie, but is it accurate? I read that Antoinette most likely would have had bread and wine for breakfast.
Answer: Marie Antoinette was actually quite abstemious, she did not stuff herself with rich food. According to her lady in waiting, Madame Campan, she ate only boiled or roasted poultry, and drank only water. She was, according to Madame Campan, fond of her morning coffee and a special kind of bread she had in Vienna as a child.
I strongly advise you to read the memoirs of Madame Campan if you are interested in Marie Antoinette, as it is an eye-witness account of the Queen and what she was like.
In fact, she was not at all 'spoilt rockstar' the 2006 movie is highly inaccurate. She was not extravagent, and by no means indifferent to the plight of the poor. In fact, both she and Louis gave generously to the poor in times of hardship, in the hard winter of 1784, for example, she gave almost a million francs out of her personal allowance to the poor of Versailles, and she was the only member of the court who, when out hunting, would never ride or drive across a peasant's field of wheat.
