Question: What happened to all of Marie Antoinette's jewelery and dresses etc.?
She was known for having extravagant dresses and jewelery etc. What happened to everything?
Are some originals in museums? Was anything saved?
Answer: Very, very little survived. After the fall of the Bourbons, the revolutionary government sold off as much as they could. They actually held auctions to sell furnishings, clothing, accessories and many of the jewels.
Many other pieces were stolen and either kept or sold off independently, while still many other pieces were randomly destroyed by mobs.
A full inventory has of course never been taken; and much has been lost forever.
