Execution Of Marie Antoinette 1793

Question: How did the execution of Louis XVI relate to Enlightenment?
Answer: Quite simply, Enlightenment politics meant the people were to rule themselves.
"...some elements of the people of France to eventually view him as a symbol of the perceived tyranny of the Ancien Régime. Suspended and arrested during the Insurrection of 10 August, he was tried by the National Convention, found guilty of treason, and executed by guillotine on 21 January 1793. Today, historians and French people in general have a more nuanced view of Louis XVI, who is seen as an honest man with good intentions, but who was probably unfit for the herculean task of reforming the monarchy, and who was used as a scapegoat by the revolutionaries." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_XVI_of_France
So he was a scapegoat for all that was wrong with French politics.
"During the Reign of Terror, at the height of the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette's husband was deposed and the royal family was imprisoned. Marie Antoinette was tried, convicted of treason and executed by guillotine on 16 October 1793, nine months after her husband.
In popular culture, the phrase "Let them eat cake" is often attributed to Marie Antoinette. However, there is a great deal of controversy as to whether it was she who actually said the quote." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Antoinette
Whether she said it or not, THAT was the thing we remember most about French politics by the monarchy---that they were cold hearted and cared nothing for the people, who by that time had come to care for themselves and care nothing for the monarchy.
