marie antoinette and let them eat cake
Question: Wasn't Marie Antoinette doing exactly what she was supposed to do?

Back then all a queen real had to do was attend to her husband, produce and raise a male heir, and manage the house. Right? She did all these things, and even though she wasn't as involved as Queen Elizabeth I or Isabella, she still did what was expected. She didn't need to exactly spend all that money, but doing what was expected of her wasn't really a reason to send her to the guillotine. At least that's what I think. She wasn't as oblivious as people perceive her to be (although there is no doubt that she was slightly oblivious) and she wasn't as stupid as people said either. She never said "Let them eat cake". She did all that was expected of a queen at that time, and she did it well. What do you think?

Answer: Marie Antoinette's role as queen was to produce an heir, to preside over the court, to be a hostess to other visiting monarchs, ambasssadors etc.

She was frivolous and extravagent, but the amount of money she spent was trifling when compared to the huge amounts spent on wars for example, the American War of Independence, which cost France a fortune. Those who blamed her fro France's financial problems were being unreasonable. and in fact she gave generously to the poor in times of hardship.

She did make some attempt to meddle in politics, encouraged by her mother and then by her brother to further Austria's interests. But really she was completely out of her depth.

In general, though, I think the hatred levelled at her was unfair. She did not spend as much as she was accused of, and she wished the French people no ill. She was caught up in events that overwhelmed her.

Question: For fun: What dead, famous person were you in a past life? AND WHY?

You'll get the vote if you impress with your reason BEHIND the choice- for instance, you were Emily Dickinson because you almost never leave your home, find youself only wearing white dresses (could be troublesome if you're now a man), write boatloads of poetry and haven't yet married.. In other words, link up the attributes of the person with your own attributes.

The person could be someone who is obviously famous like King Henry VIII or Mozart, or it could be someone within a "realm" of notoriety, for instance, I have a friend who jokes that she was a member of the court during Marie Antoinette's time..

Have fun with this one, please. My favorite, creative response will get the vote.

I'm not asking if you believe in reincarnation, I'm only asking people to have fun with this question.

Thanks! ;)

Answer: I always believed myself like Ludwig Beethoven. He took his broken heart and expressed it in his music. I am not really musical but write. I have a secret love. I write so that my writing might one day reach that person. Because I am unfilled I can be cranky and misunderstood like Beethoven. I guess really its the depth of pain and triumph also through the pain that I can relate to with Beethoven.

Please watch the movie Immortal Beloved. You will be touched and feel his music more deeply than ever...
