Question: Did Marie Antoinette really say "Let them eat cake?"?
I have read that this is myth and legend. Anyone know how it started?
I don't believe that she did.
Answer: She probably did not, and the idea that she did was likely written in a revolutionary pamphlet, leading us to that conclusion today. The revolutionaries (obviously) really hated Marie Antoinette and her husband; in pamphlets she was often depicted as a whore, and all sorts of things were said about her, "Let them eat cake," being among the least terrible.
