Question: French Revolution fashion?

During the 16th century, when Marie Antoinette Was Queen Of France, what were the types of clothes that the rich men, such as King Louis XVI, would wear? They wore tights and wigs but what were the other things they wore?

Answer: It was the 18th century, towards the end, and fashion changed quite radically during and after the French Revolution.

In the middle of the century, dresses were wide (with panniers) and ornate; hairstyles were huge and decorated and powdered. Men wore embroidered coats with stockings (not tights) and high heels on shoes. Costume would include a shirt, cravat, waistcoat - usually embroidered - breeches. They would wear powdered wigs in different styles. All would be of rich materials, expensive lace, "clocks" (patterns) embroidered on stockings, and fancy little shoes for the ladies. In the 1790s the dresses became simpler and necklines covered with a fichu. Men's clothes also calmed down a bit.

Have a look here, and read - it's really quite good, with a selection of pictures. There's also a caricature near the bottom with the old and new styles.
